About this book
Artemas Quibble introduces himself with the family history of a lawyer already alert to loopholes and personal advantage. Raised in Lynn, Massachusetts, by a stern minister, he later attends the boarding school of the erratic Reverend Quirk. His early interest in law includes examining his grandfather's will for a technical mistake that might turn its funds to his own benefit.
Arthur Cheney Train gives this novel the form of Quibble's candid recollections of life in the New York criminal courts. The later excerpt weighs professional ambition against financial hardship and describes the influence of political connections on judges. An anecdote about Peters, a struggling newcomer to the city, brings those pressures down to the daily search for work. The humor rests on Quibble's frank self-interest, making the book a pointed look at the distance between legal ideals and earning a living.
