The Contract

The Contract is one of Lisa Renee Jones’s contemporary erotic romance novels, working in the territory she has been mining successfully since the Inside Out series turned her into a major name in the genre. Jones writes the kind of romance where the central pairing involves an established arrangement of some kind, often with formal or contractual elements, and the work of the novel is figuring out what happens when feelings start to complicate the agreed terms.

The contract premise hints at a setup Jones has used in various forms across her career. A wealthy man with a complicated past makes a specific arrangement with a heroine who has reasons of her own for accepting it. The arrangement is supposed to be temporary, controlled, and emotionally insulated. Of course the emotional insulation fails, and the slow recognition that what started as transactional has become something neither of them planned drives the rest of the book. Jones is good at this kind of premise because she takes the time to make both characters’ reasons for the arrangement believable. They are not just being mysterious for the sake of mystery. They have specific situations they are trying to manage, and the unraveling of those situations is what gives the romance its weight.

Jones’s prose is brisk and her plots move. Her chapters end with hooks, her dialogue carries real chemistry, and her sex scenes are explicit and frequent in the way her readers expect. What distinguishes her from a lot of her peers in the high heat romance corner is the emotional grounding. Her characters tend to have real interior lives and real reasons for the choices they make, and the romance carries weight because she has done the work of building it.

For readers who enjoy Sylvia Day, Maya Banks, J. Kenner, or the high heat end of contemporary romance generally, Lisa Renee Jones is squarely in the same neighborhood. Her catalogue is large enough that picking a starting point can feel daunting, but most of her standalones work in any order. The Contract is a comfortable entry and a fair sample of what she does best.
