About this book
Fashionable New York society supplies the setting for Royall Tyler's five-act comedy, where imported manners meet the plain speech of a New England visitor. Jonathan, the country character, tries to understand the rules of city life, while Jessamy offers lessons in courtship with motives of his own. Their conversation turns elaborate compliments and practiced bows into opportunities for misunderstanding, making the distance between social polish and honest intention visible on the page.
The edition opens with an account of Tyler's background and the play's 1787 performance at the John Street Theatre. It also connects his comedy with Sheridan's The School for Scandal and describes the theatrical importance of Jonathan.
