About this book
This volume gives The New York Idea, a play by Langdon Mitchell, with an introduction that notes his birth in Philadelphia on 17 February 1862 and the performance at the Lyric Theatre in New York on 19 November 1906. The introduction describes that performance as a rare event in the American theatre, and a critic quoted in the volume calls the play a social satire.
A saying quoted from one of its characters explains the title: marry for whim and leave the rest to the divorce court. The stage directions run through the text, and a scene with Vida, Benson, John and Cynthia plays out in whispers and asides, with John answering that he has a date with the sheriff. In another passage Cynthia and John sit and talk while John lights his pipe.
