About this book
The Counts of Gruyère by Anna De Koven speaks of a sovereign line of counts who ruled for six hundred years, and calls their history a pastoral epic, melodious with song and legend. The contents list names, among others, Origin of the People, Influence of the Church and The Fall of the House of Gruyère. The text says Gruyère was never romanized, being settled only in its outlying plains by occasional Gallo-Roman villas.
The text speaks of the memorable day of Morat, when Savoy was pitted against its own cities and the Confederates against their Burgundian cousins. The text says three months had passed since Grandson and Duke Charles had succeeded in assembling a new army. The text names many exquisite towns in the Romand country, among them Romont and Rue, Estavayer, Oron and Morat, and says the heart of that country is Gruyère, impregnated with the romance of the departed days of chivalry.
