About this book
H. Claiborne Dixon is the author of The Abbeys of Great Britain. The contents list names, among others, Hexham, Jarrow and Finchale. The text quotes Cardinal Newman's description of silent men observed about the country, or discovered in the forest, digging, cleaning and building.
The text says Dunstan, the great Church reformer and statesman, built and restored as many as forty monasteries. John Penryn, elected Abbot of Tavistock in 1522, began his rule in peace and quietness, little thinking that he was to be last abbot of Tavistock, the text says. Lincluden is situated quite near Sweetheart, the text says, was at one time a favourite haunt of Burns, and was beautifully described by him in his lines.
