About this book

The Covenant of Salt takes as its stated basis the significance and symbolism of salt in primitive thought. The explanation of primitive covenanting describes a union in which the common life shared by the parties bound them irrevocably. The discussion of words translated as covenant says that lexicographers and critics disagree about the supposed Hebrew or Assyrian roots involved.

The account of salt and treachery says that Judas Iscariot is represented as having overturned the salt-cellar in Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper. The discussion of English-speaking peoples reports a saying that spilling salt between two people threatens a quarrel, as though friendship were already broken.
