The Crime Code

The Crime Code is by William Le Queux, author of Poison Shadows, and is noted as published in England under the title Double Nought. The contents list includes, among others, the chapters To Beg Pardon of the Reader, Threads of Iron, The Six Circles, The Shop-Window Clue and The Dark House.

The narrator says that evening-clothes had been changed for the garb of a lorry-driver, a decent, gray tweed suit of cheap material, fairly good boots, a thick, well-worn overcoat, and a rather greasy, brown golf-cap. The narrator waited in vain for some sign from Illona, who would, the narrator knew, explain much that was an entire enigma. The text says that the vigilance of the police, as far as Owen was concerned, was unrewarded, and speaks of a young fellow who was reported to be living the idle life of a man-about-town. The narrator reports that a fast "Indian" passed the narrator at about thirty miles an hour with the escaping suspect upon it.
