About this book
The Great Prince Shan by E. Phillips Oppenheim carries the year 1922 beside its title, and its contents list runs up to Chapter XXXII. In one scene Prince Karschoff remarks A club for diplomats and gentlemen, while looking lazily through a little cloud of tobacco smoke around the spacious but almost deserted card room.
A young woman asks Nigel what he thinks of her new profession, and he answers frankly that he hates it. The Prime Minister speaks of the era of peace owing to the happy influence of the League of Nations, and says France alone has decided to follow still the path of militarism. One passage names Prince Shan among the few refusals, saying even he made use of compromise.
