The Crisis

American novelist Winston Churchill, not the British statesman, set this bestseller in St. Louis during the tense years that led to the Civil War. Stephen Brice, a young lawyer from Boston with firm Union sympathies, arrives in a Missouri torn between North and South. He is drawn to Virginia Carvel, spirited daughter of a proud slaveholding family, and their romance strains against the widening divide. Real history presses in as Abraham Lincoln, whom Brice comes to admire, moves the nation toward war. Published in 1901, the book was one of the great popular successes of its day, mixing love story, courtroom drama, and battlefield sweep. This free PDF and EPUB edition presents the complete novel.
