About this book

The Cup of Fury bears the subtitle A Novel of Cities and Shipyards. Marie Louise reflects that marriage would be agreeable if a person could remain single at the same time. Polly Widdicombe is described as exceptionally well dressed, with a habit of giggling and setting others laughing, though her conversation is rarely witty on its own account.

Marie Louise knows that a wrong word or an act out of key might end Polly’s friendship forever and turn affection into open hostility. The account of a military offensive describes people across the country moving pins farther back on maps, while strategy becomes a subject of general conversation.
