About this book
We Can't Have Everything is a book by Rupert Hughes. The contents list names, among others, a first book titled Miss Kedzie Thropp Comes to Town and a second book titled Mrs. Tommie Gilfoyle Has Her Picture Taken. A character named Adna remembers that he has not settled upon his headquarters in New York and asks a man for a good hotel there that is not too far from the railroad and does not rob you of your last nickel.
One of the smoking-room humorists mocked his accent and ventured a crude jape, saying he could save the price of a hack-ride by going to Mrs. Biltmore's new boarding-house. A character named Dyckman answers, Of course not, I'll take care of you, I offered to before, and the text adds that he had made a proposal of marriage some time before. A passage says Charity underwent a martyrdom of ridicule during his testimony, and that Jim and Charity made their grotesque pilgrimage without exciting sympathy.
