About this book

The Dead Are Silent is by Arthur Schnitzler, and a man named Franz could endure the quiet waiting in the carriage no longer, since it was easier to get out and walk up and down. Asked "You are walking?", a lady says she dismissed the cab in front of the theatre.

A feeling of horrible alone-ness came over a woman who asks why she had sent the coachman away and what she should do here all alone with this dead man in the darkness. The light seemed to her to become alive, something sweet and friendly, to which she owed gratitude. The Professor asks very gravely what is the matter, and a woman pressing the boy closer to her breast is told that she had fallen asleep and then screamed out in her sleep.

Arthur Schnitzler

Arthur Schnitzler was an Austrian author and dramatist. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of Viennese Modernism. Schnitzler's works, which include psychological dramas and narratives, dissected turn-of-the-century Viennese bourgeois life, making him a sharp and stylistically conscious chronicler of Viennese society around 1900.
