About this book

To Be Read at Dusk places five couriers on a bench outside the convent on the summit of the Great St. Bernard in Switzerland. The narrator sits on another bench across the convent door, smoking a cigar and looking at the reddened snow. The Swiss courier refers to talk of ghosts, while the German denies that ghosts are what he is discussing.

The account of the mistress describes her growing accustomed to a grim palazzo, singing, playing the harp, copying old pictures, and strolling beneath trees and vines with the master. The German courier says he accompanied Mr. James into his brother's room and personally saw and heard what followed.
