About this book
The Lonely Way, Intermezzo, Countess Mizzie gathers three plays by Arthur Schnitzler, translated from the German with an introduction by Edwin Björkman. The contents list names an introduction, The Lonely Way, Intermezzo and Countess Mizzie. The introduction describes Hermann Bahr as a noted playwright and critic who tried one day to explain the spirit of certain Viennese architecture to a German friend. Bahr retorts, You forget that our history is partly Spanish.
The text says the author neither approves nor disapproves when he makes each character speak in accordance with his own nature. The text describes the little one-act play The Life Partner as significant mainly as a study for bigger canvases developing the same theme: the veil that hides the true life of man and woman alike from the partner. The text says another one-act play, The Green Cockatoo, is laid at Paris, its action taking place on the evening of July 14, 1789, the fall of the Bastille and the birth of the Revolution.
