About this book
The Dead Towns of Georgia is a book by Charles C. Jones, Jr. The title page carries the line For here have we no continuing city, with the reference Heb: xiii. 14. The text says that during his tour of inspection in 1755, Governor Reynolds was so much pleased with the natural advantages of the Great Ogeechee river that he selected a bluff upon its right bank.
The text says Mr. George Sibbald, speaking of Petersburg in 1800, called it second only to Augusta in point of situation and commercial consequence. The text says that Petersburg continued to be a place of considerable commercial importance so long as the cultivation of tobacco engrossed the attention of the planters in the circumjacent region. The text says that Petersburg, in the zenith of its prosperity, contained a distributing post-office, a market place, a town-hall, several churches, and not less than forty stores and warehouses.
