About this book
The Defence of Duffer's Drift by E. D. Swinton is told in the first person by a narrator who describes a first independent command and is determined to carry out the orders to the bitter end. The orders say that the narrator should probably be visited by some column within three or four days' time, and might possibly be attacked before that time, but that this was very unlikely, as no enemy were known to be within a hundred miles.
Poor fellows in the text try to build up a pitiful little kind of house of cards with stones and pieces of anthill through which to fire, and the structure is at once shot to powder before they have even used it. The night passes without much incident, and during the dark some new white sandbags found among the stores are cunningly placed in full view at some little distance from the actual trenches and pits.
