About this book
Three doctors leave Hugh Whitaker facing the prospect of only a few months to live. At twenty-five, the young lawyer struggles to reconcile their judgment with his sense of strength and good health. He walks through the city in shock, then reaches his club and finds a letter from the woman he has planned to marry. Louis Joseph Vance gives the opening its tension through Whitaker's anger, disbelief and concern for the future they had expected to share.
A later scene places Whitaker at a bungalow beside a bay, recovering from a sprained ankle. His conversation with Ember moves from friendly teasing to surprise when he mentions Miss Fiske. Published in 1912, this novel brings together romance, adventure and mystery. Readers can follow the shifts between private fears and uneasy social encounters, where a casual remark or an unexpected acquaintance can change the mood of a scene.
