About this book
Joseph O'Brien novelized The Devil from Henry W. Savage's play by Ferenc Molnar. The subtitle is A Tragedy of the Heart and Conscience, and the foreword speaks of a battle between good and evil in every human heart. In one scene the artist Karl comes in from a snowstorm, feels that his big armchair by the fire is occupied though it is empty, and calls for his servant Heinrich. He sends away Mimi, who is waiting in the studio to pose.
In another, Elsa tells Dr. Millar that she knows quite well the way she is going, that she goes proudly, and that she consents to be his wife because she loves him, and then she begins to sob. Millar is opening a small satchel as he asks her why. A prose passage elsewhere reflects on how people imagine the Devil and mentions the temptation of Christ on the mountain top.
