About this book
The Devil's picture-books is a history of playing-cards by Mrs. John King Van Rensselaer. The preface says the Puritans and other pious souls bestowed a name upon Playing-cards, probably in hopes that the name would alarm timid persons and so prevent their use. The text describes suits of Hares, Parrots, Pinks, Roses, and Columbines, with the usual King, Queen, Knight, and Knave in each suit.
The text says the Joker is not necessarily part of the pack and does not accompany each one. The text says the saints’ pictures always bore a small streamer or ribbon on which the name of the holy person represented was written.
