About this book
The title page presents The Early English Cotton Industry as a work that includes some unpublished letters of Samuel Crompton. Crompton was not a practical mechanic, and the account says that he performed his work using the simplest tools. The account regards the evidence as too slight to assert confidently that the maker of the machine independently discovered the roller method.
The mule in its early stages was worked entirely by hand and was chiefly used in cottages in country districts, like the jenny rather than the water-frame. The account connects the spread of mule spinning with high wages that drew shoemakers, joiners and hat-makers away from their previous employment. Hargreaves’ patent concerned more expeditious methods of spinning, drawing and twisting cotton.
