About this book
The title page sets the subject as the mediæval monarchy in England and advertises numerous maps and plans. The account describes David entering England with a large army in 1138 and pushing forward as far as Northallerton in Yorkshire. The account says Stephen, conscious of general weakness despite victory, accepted an unfavourable peace that gave Northumberland to Prince Henry.
The account of church reform says William intended to Romanize the national Church, following an enterprise undertaken with the full concurrence of the Roman See. The description of the English Church says its laws had been enacted by a mixed secular and ecclesiastical Witan, with the bishop beside secular judges in the shire gemot.
