The Elusive Pimpernel was published in 1908 and is the second Pimpernel novel Orczy wrote. The setting is the same French Revolution period. Chauvelin, the relentless French agent from the first book, has not given up on capturing Sir Percy Blakeney, and the novel functions essentially as a long set-piece rematch.

Marguerite has settled into her role as the Pimpernel’s wife and full collaborator. Chauvelin’s plan this time involves a sequence of escalating traps in northern France, with multiple rescues of condemned aristocrats running in parallel under Percy’s coordination. There is a long sequence at Boulogne where Chauvelin believes he finally has Percy cornered. There is a daring escape at sea. The novel was hugely popular at the time and helped solidify the Pimpernel as a sustainable franchise rather than a one-off success. Modern readers may find the pacing repetitive in places after the original novel, but the cat-and-mouse dynamics between Percy and Chauvelin are sharpened in the rematch.
