About this book
The End of the Middle Ages, with the subtitle Essays and Questions in History, is by A. Mary F. Robinson. A dedication addressed to Mr. Symonds says the writer sends a little book, different from the many volumes.
The text says that while little Gertrude laboured so hard to make herself desirable, Mechtild, quite simply and without effort, won all hearts to herself. The text calls Sforza a benevolent usurper, saying that even in Milan there were many ill content to thrive under his orderly government, and that Republicans, Orleanists, Guelfs and Ghibellines were alike jealous and ill at ease under his military dictatorship.
