About this book
The preface explains that limited space for the different aspects of European history led the author to concentrate on the central struggle between the Papacy and the Empire. Eudocia chooses Romanus Diogenes as a second husband and co-regent, a soldier of high reputation who lacks the prudence and policy necessary to a general. The account places a decisive battle in 1071 at Manzikert, an Armenian town north of Lake Van.
The description of government contrasts a political Council following the king's ceaseless wanderings with a Parliament gradually settling permanently at Paris. The account of St. Louis says that appeals to the king's court replaced trial by combat, which he abolished.
