About this book
Medieval People is by Eileen Power and was first published in 1924. It is dedicated to her colleagues and students at Girton College, Cambridge, and it carries lines from Langland's Piers Plowman about cloister and school, followed by an author's preface on social history.
In one passage the estate of Ausonius in the Bordelais is described, with its vines, its roses, a luncheon for six, and verses for his relatives and for the professors of Bordeaux. The text notes that the place is still known as Chateau-Ausone. In another passage, advice to a wife on keeping her husband's good favour mentions the rustic proverb of a dripping roof, a smoking chimney and a scolding woman. Elsewhere a house tied to the Paycocke and Buxton families is followed through its sale, its division into two cottages and its restoration by Noel Buxton.
