About this book
Thinking directly in Esperanto, with a rose or a pigeon pictured in the mind, is Helen Fryer's starting point for language study. Her 1907 handbook addresses learners who find formal grammar difficult or have forgotten what they learned at school. It combines explanations of sounds and spelling with exercises intended for both independent study and the classroom. Fryer advises reading sentences aloud, translating them back from English, and checking each attempt against the original.
Later sections show how small grammatical choices shape meaning. Examples explain compound words, flexible word order, the placement of negatives, and the different endings used when describing an object or saying something about it. The practical instructions make this a useful introduction for readers interested in Esperanto's structure. Its account of Zamenhof's hopes for communication among peoples also connects the lessons to the international purpose behind the language.
