About this book
The Eternal Laughter, and Other Poems is by W. Starling Burgess, with an introduction by Julian Hawthorne and drawings by Edward Lyne and Edmund H Garrett. The introduction says most of our contemporary poetry is first seen in our magazines, and that this may be one reason why it is so uniformly meritorious (as regards form and intelligence). The introduction says that real poetry belongs to another category and is always the product of real emotion felt by the individual who writes it.
One poem addresses the night, asking where it has gone and whether it is dead and laid within the tombéd past. A poem headed Death has a speaker who cries “What is death?” and hears the earth answer “It is the grave.”
