About this book
The Excavations of Roman Baths at Bath is by Charles Edward Davis and is "Re-printed from the Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archæological Society." The text says Leland, "on his visit to Bath in the year 1530, with tolerable fulness describes the baths". The writer says the excavations "which it has been my good fortune to superintend" and the discoveries made "have fully explained Leland's meaning".
Dr. Lucas, "Assisted by Mr. Wood, architect," examined the ruins, and the text gives a description of "traces of a bath, whose dimensions are 43ft. by 34ft." The writer thinks the arcades were roofed with tiles: "From the number of roofing tiles of local stone, shaped into hexagons, found, I think these arcades were roofed in with them." A price list headed "CHARGES FOR BATHS" names the "New Royal Baths, Adjoining the Grand Hotel" and gives, among others, "First Class Deep Bath.. 2 6".
