About this book
The Towns of Roman Britain is a book by J. O. Bevan. The preface says the author writes the last line of the book with a sigh at the incompleteness of his work. The contents list names places such as Kenchester, Lancaster and Leicester, each followed by a second name in brackets, among others.
The historical sketch says the earliest notice of Britain is in Herodotus, who mentions the Tin Islands only to confess his ignorance about them. A writer of the life of the Emperor Antoninus Pius states that Lollius Urbicus, a legate of that sovereign, erected, after several victories over the Britons, another rampart of turf to check their incursions. A town is referred to by the Ravenna Geographer as Viroconium Cornoviorum.
