About this book
The Eyes of Asia is by Rudyard Kipling. The contents list A Retired Gentleman, The Fumes of the Heart, The Private Account and A Trooper of Horse. A Retired Gentleman is a letter from Bishen Singh Saktawut, Subedar Major, now at Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England, sent to Madhu Singh, Risaldar Major, and written in the fifth month of the year 1916, English count.
The letter says old men should not do coolie-work, that the cavalry were useless in France, and that the nature of the enemy is to go to earth and flood us with artillery of large weight. In a scene with a Father and a Mother, a Son reads a letter that says to even up the account from the nearest household of our enemies and to take our revenge quickly. One note says a phrase is their dismissal at night, invoking the blessing of their God, and that they use a Tasbih in form like ours but of more beads and recite prayers both sitting and walking.
