About this book

A prosperous hive gives Bernard Mandeville a way to examine the uneasy relationship between private conduct and public wealth. His rhymed fable is surrounded by remarks, essays and dialogues that question where moral virtue comes from and how governments make use of human failings. In the preface, he compares society to a complicated machine whose workings depend on parts its admirers would rather overlook. London's crowded, dirty streets become a concrete example of the costs that accompany thriving trade.

The discussion extends to charity schools, pride, religious conviction and the desire for other people's approval. In the dialogues, Horatio objects to the fable while his friend Cleomenes tries to bring him into a fuller argument. Readers interested in ethics and political philosophy will find a sustained challenge to the assumption that a wealthy society can also possess complete innocence. The different forms let Mandeville state his case, answer objections and test the language of respectable behavior.

About the author

Bernard Mandeville

Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) was an Anglo-Dutch philosopher, political economist, satirist and physician. Born in Rotterdam, he spent most of his life in England and wrote nearly all of his published work in English. His writings include "The Fable of the Bees".
