About this book
The collection presents fables written in familiar verse, with an introduction by John S. Shea. The introduction suggests that the difference between Dennis and Mandeville may be the interval of ten years and a fading influence of Butler, but calls that explanation unlikely.
The carp loses part of his tail and snout and returns home lean, shabby, and as vain and ignorant as before. The moral says strange countries may improve a man who already knew the world, while an ignorant traveller drawn only by vanity brings back their vices. The Nightingale and Owl begins with the Bird of Jove intent upon prey throughout the day and displeased always to find his household in bed on coming home.
