About this book

In the riverside town of Mudfog, even a damp street and a shabby town hall receive the narrator's grandest compliments. Charles Dickens turns this inflated civic pride into comic sketches of English social life. Nicholas Tulrumble begins as a coal dealer, grows wealthy, and takes an increasing interest in public affairs. His ambitions grow as he watches the Lord Mayor's splendid ceremony in London, where news arrives of his own election as mayor.

The collection also includes reports of the Mudfog Association for the Advancement of Everything, with sections devoted to scientific subjects and fanciful fields of study. A passage aboard a crowded vessel follows professors through supper, awkward sleeping arrangements, and a coin toss over a bottle of wine. Small inconveniences receive solemn attention, making the reporting itself part of the joke. Readers interested in Dickens's shorter fiction will find satire built from official language, social pretension, and closely observed everyday habits.
