About this book
The Fair God is subtitled Or, The Last of the 'Tzins: A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico. The author's note says a personal experience, though ever so plainly told, is, generally speaking, more attractive to listeners and readers than fiction. The text says Iztlil', the Tezcucan, had donned the uniform of an Aztec chieftain since his affair with Guatamozin.
Under the chapter heading The Christians in the Toils, a king says that the azoteas be cleared of all but his family and tells his brother to remain. Olmedo replies to Cortes that he rushed in and stayed the work until the victims themselves prayed the chiefs to go on.
