About this book
Manasseh is a romance of Transylvania by Mór Jókai, retold in English by Percy Favor Bicknell (Boston, 1901). The contents list chapters titled "A Fellow Traveller", "Holy Week in Rome", "An Audience with the Pope", "The Anonymous Letter", "A Ghostly Visitant", "Wallachian Hospitality" and "Balyika Cave".
In one scene two ladies on a train talk about a young man whom they call a heretic. One of them says his name is Manasseh Adorjan, that he is of old Szekler descent, and that he has seven brothers and a twin sister, all living in the family's ancestral castle. In another passage Blanka is troubled by wasps, and Aaron sets a bunch of dry grass alight in a hollow beech to smoke them out. The tree catches and flames rise from the top, and Zenobia cries out. Elsewhere the talk turns to whether Manasseh Adorjan will fight when he is ordered to.
