About this book

A borrowed evening of splendour comes with a strict deadline in Perrault's Cinderilla: her godmother's magic will disappear at midnight. At the ball, the prince greets an unknown visitor, the musicians stop, and her own sisters fail to recognise her. She shares fruit with them, then returns home and listens as they describe the stranger they have just admired. The scene makes family rivalry and the pleasure of a secret identity as central as the enchanted coach and glass slippers.

This collection brings that story together with Little Red Riding-Hood, Puss in Boots, The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood and other fairy tales. The 1922 edition includes illustrations by Harry Clarke and an introduction by Thomas Bodkin that follows Charles Perrault's varied work in literature, architecture and royal service. Readers can compare familiar story names with the older wording and social manners of these versions, where courtly ceremony and everyday unkindness meet magical changes of fortune.

About the author

Charles Perrault

Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a French lawyer and senior administrator under Louis XIV's minister Colbert, and a member of the Academie francaise who argued the case for modern writers against the ancients. Only after leaving office did he publish the fairy tales that outlived all his official work.
