About this book
Cinderella; or, The Little Glass Slipper is a story in Hewet's Household Stories for Little Folks, by Henry W. Hewet. A gentleman and his wife are the parents of a lovely little daughter, and when the child is only nine years of age her mother falls sick. The step-mother, a widow lady of a proud and tyrannical temper, compels the poor girl to do all the drudgery of the household.
The family gives the nickname of Cinderella to the one who used to sit in the chimney-corner amongst the cinders. A ball is given by the king's son, to which he invites all the nobility, and His Royal Highness welcomes Cinderella and hands her out of the carriage. Conversation is hushed, the violins cease playing and the dancing stops short, so great is the sensation produced by the stranger's beauty. A caption reads Marriage of the Prince and Cinderella.
