About this book

Sedgehill stands on a ridge between the furnaces of England's Black Country and the green countryside of the western Midlands. In this setting, Ellen Thorneycroft Fowler introduces a family whose ironworks shape the town's daily life. Maria and Anne Farringdon own the Osierfield Works and live at the Willows, where they raise their adopted young relative, Elisabeth. Maria's firm business sense and strict Methodist beliefs contrast with Anne's gentleness and Elisabeth's lively imagination.

The novel follows affection, duty and personal feeling within this close community. Elisabeth's early concern with beauty and her habit of examining her own thoughts give the opening a humorous, observant tone. A later scene brings her alongside Christopher during his uncle's serious illness, showing how sympathy can change the way two people see each other.
