About this book

News of a squire's funeral gathers the villagers of Rudham around the blacksmith's forge, where talk soon turns to the young man inheriting the estate. Along the river, tenants weigh the advantages of a distant landlord against the uncertain intentions of his successor. H. Louisa Bedford gives this English village a busy social life, with servants, tradesmen and neighbours trading opinions, watching arrivals and taking an interest in one another's courtships.

Paul Lessing considers himself responsible for improving the village, but the money needed for those plans is scarce. His sharp disagreement with May Webster, one of his tenants and neighbours, exposes differences in their tastes and expectations before giving way to an offer of friendship. The novel brings questions of property, education and neighbourly duty into ordinary conversations, making it a useful read for those interested in village customs and the tensions between social ranks.
