About this book
The Fat of the Land is subtitled The Story of an American Farm and is by John Williams Streeter. A note says the book was set up, electrotyped, and published February, 1904. The contents list includes, among others, chapters called The Hunting of the Land, The Hired Man and Boring for Water.
A first-person passage about driving around the boundaries of their land says the writer had waited so many years for the sense of ownership of land that the writer could hardly realize that this was not another dream. The text introduces a family called the Kyrles with the words "For more than twenty-five years we have known no joys or sorrows which they did not feel". A passage about the little crop from six hundred trees says that in our climate the Yellow Transparent and the Duchess do not ripen until early September.
