About this book

Albert Weener answers an advertisement promising handsome daily earnings and finds himself in a shabby Hollywood apartment, listening to Josephine Spencer Francis explain her plant treatment. She hopes to make crops flourish on poor ground; he sees a market among householders with tired lawns. Their disagreement sets scientific ambition beside a salesman's eye for commissions and convenient customers.

Published in 1947, Ward Moore's science fiction novel tells its story through Weener's own account. His judgments about business, women and respectability give the narration a satirical edge. Later scenes carry him into wartime Washington, where he seeks a contract for concentrated field rations and cultivates a general's acquaintance over dinner. The growing grass, commercial opportunism and dealings with officials make this a book for readers interested in how an extraordinary invention meets ordinary vanity, self-interest and public institutions.
