About this book
Manual of American grape-growing is by U. P. Hedrick and appears in a group called The Rural Manuals. The text names the Chautauqua grape-belt, along the northeastern shore of Lake Erie in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, as the second most important grape region in America. A quoted estimate puts the shipping-grape vineyards at 75,000 acres, divided among the Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin, Southern California and the Coast ranges.
On shipping, the text says decay in grapes is largely dependent on the presence of injuries to the grape berries, to the pedicels or to the stems of the bunches. In the shipment of European grapes from California, the text says, it pays to go to much extra trouble in handling the crop. A variety description gives clusters small, round, unshouldered and loose, with berries few in a cluster, large, round, dull green, often with brown tinge, firm.
