About this book

A brilliant meteor falls into a Massachusetts field in November 1940 and keeps burning with a strange green and red light that water cannot touch and only a record cold spell puts out. The narrator, a reporter for the Boston Observer, watches the crowds gather, sees an aircraft fall in flames after passing over the beam, and follows the news as a second fireball lands near Juneau, Alaska.

When Professor Newland, the leading astronomer of the day, argues that these lights point to intelligent life on Mercury, the story turns from mystery to adventure. The chapters move from invaders and a daring escape to a landing on the planet itself, with its sunlit Light Country, its colder Twilight Country, a winged people who fly in great numbers, and a schemer named Tao.

Ray Cummings wrote it as a serial for the pulp weekly Argosy All-Story in 1922, and it reads like the planetary romances of that period: brisk, inventive and full of light-rays, flying folk and alien cities. It suits readers curious about how American science fiction looked in the early pulp magazines.
