About this book

The Voice of the Void is a work by John W. Campbell. The opening note says the science of astronomy concerns itself with the great and the small, and that the distances in the stellar world are inconceivable by man. A character named Hal Jus works at the controls of the electroscope until an image begins to form on one of the lambently glowing screens. The text says that of the family of original wheeling planets only four were left: Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury.

The text says only ten short years remained, so, although no weapon had been developed, a great battle fleet was started, that the ships might be ready when at last the weapon was developed. The text says that, at the end of three weeks, the energy field had slowly dissipated itself into space and there were no more of the Atomic Giants.

John W. Campbell

John W. Campbell Jr. (1910-1971) was an American science fiction writer and, more lastingly, the editor of Astounding Science Fiction, where he shaped the genre's Golden Age. His early space operas ran under his own name, while darker stories such as Who Goes There? appeared as Don A. Stuart.
