About this book
The Cocoanut, by William Scrugham Lyon, deals with the cocoanut with reference to its products and cultivation in the Philippines. The letter of transmittal says the bulletin responds to numerous inquiries about the cocoanut, its uses, cultivation, and preparation for market. The contents list names sections on Copra and cocoanut oil, Coir and Tuba, among others.
The text calls the cocoanut (Cocos nucifera Linn.) the sole oriental representative of a tropical genus comprising nineteen species. The text says that in the Visayas there is a variety in which the fibrous outer husk of the nut is sweet and watery, instead of dry and astringent. The text says a fall from a lofty tree not infrequently cracks the inner shell without giving any external evidence of the injury, and that a seed so injured will never sprout. The conclusion says there are large areas throughout the littoral valleys of the Archipelago, as yet unexploited, which are suitable for cocoanut growing in the essentials of soil, climate, irrigation facilities, and general environment.
