The First Little Pet Book with Ten Short Stories in Words of Three and Four Letters is a book by Aunt Fanny. A dedication names Charlotte, Mary, and Willie, three dear little children about whom the author told funny stories in two of the Mitten books. The preface to mothers says that many and many a time mothers have come to the author with the piteous plaint that they are perfectly worn out with the Nightcaps, Mittens, and Socks.
The contents list names tales such as The Old Gray Rat, Ann, the Good Girl and Joe, Who Did Not Mind, among others. A story says Ned got a pie to eat, and that, since it was too hot, he put it out in the air, on the lid of a big tin pot. The sly old ape, the text says, had the pie in his paw and saw Ned, and Ned did say, "Now for a run!"
