About this book
Little Minnie wants a place in the family's evening storytelling, and her mother agrees to choose a story suited to her. Aunt Fanny builds this collection for very young children around that affectionate scene, explaining how bedtime tales came to be called nightcaps. Her opening letter addresses children directly and mixes playful pet names with the promise of both funny and sad stories.
Everyday family moments supply much of the humor. At breakfast, Willie struggles to guide his spoon to his mouth while Lillie announces that she will teach him to spell. Their lesson becomes a small comedy of childhood logic, patience and pride. Christian prayers, Bible reading and Christmas celebrations give the stories a clear religious setting. The short tales offer material for reading aloud and a glimpse of the manners, speech and moral teaching of an earlier nursery.
