About this book

The Flag is a book by Homer Greene, the author of The Unhallowed Harvest, Pickett's Gap and The Blind Brother. The list of illustrations names He Glared Defiantly About Him, Into the Face of Death He Led the Remnant of His Brave Platoon, and The French Hospital's Greeting to the American Colonel. Chapter I describes snow everywhere, freshly fallen, white and beautiful, lying unsullied on the village roofs, with the spruce trees on the lawn at Bannerhall weighted with it.

Aleck Sands, a boy, steps up on a platform and says Good evening to Colonel Butler, explaining that his father has the grist-mill there and that Miss Grey, the teacher at the graded school, gave him a paper. Pen stands waiting while his mother comes to him and asks, Are you waiting for grandpa? A young soldier whose wound is apparently beginning to heal comes fully to his senses, able to articulate and to frame intelligent sentences, and indicates to his nurse that he wished to have his mother written to.
