About this book

Snow closes around Maxfield Manor as Frank Armstrong, a tutor absorbed in Schumann's music, receives a summons from the elderly Squire Ingleton. Their quiet conversation about the care of young Roger gives way to an urgent search for medical help. Talbot Baines Reed opens this novel for younger readers with a household emergency, placing the tutor's practical loyalty beside the father's anxiety about bringing up a son.

Roger's position as heir to Maxfield gives the story its concerns with family duty, inheritance and personal choice. In a later scene, he turns to Armstrong for advice about the affection he hopes to win. A sealed letter from his father, reserved for his twentieth birthday, brings another demand on his judgment. The coastal estate, the tutor's piano and the easy exchanges between pupil and teacher make this a family story for readers interested in how trust develops across generations.
